On the weekend of the Dragon Boat Festival.
Another six-year-old joined playgroup, so we have five kids total.
1. SONGS:
1a. 我的朋友在哪里 (Where is My Friend?)
Show/teach them the ASL gestures for 我的 (My), 朋友 (Friend), 在哪里 (Where) and 在这里 (Here).
1b. Teach them 小白兔,白又白 (Little white bunny)
2. INTRODUCTION:
Introduce their sibling instead of themselves.
"这是我的RELATION. 我的RELATION叫NAME. 我的RELATION AGE岁了."
I modeled the introduction by introducing V as 我的朋友. The kids did a round robin introduction.
3. SHOW AND TELL:
"这是OBJECT." One or two additional sentence about the object's color/size/physical characteristics. Ask follow-up questions as appropriate.
The kids brought interesting objects. River shared his sheep minifigure: "这是我的小羊。我的小羊是白色的。" A shared her drawing of a galaxy.
Brooks also shared his drawing: "这是我的画儿。我画了一只小兔子。" (This is my drawing. I've drawn a little bunny.)

4. READ-ALOUD:
Read "Awakening the Dragon: the Dragon Boat Festival" by Arlene Chan. I've rehearsed beforehand and timed myself, so it went pretty smoothly.
I opened by asking them yesterday's date. The kids gave me the wrong date X-D
Lesson learned: write the correct date beforehand so circle time doesn't get interrupted looking for the correct date on your phone.

Did you know that the Chinese 'lunar' calendar is actually lunisolar instead of purely lunar?
The Jewish calendar is also lunisolar. The Muslim calendar is purely lunar.

This book focuses on dragons and dragon boats instead of Qu Yuan.

I only said two sentences: "Qu Yuan is a poet and politician who really really loves his country. Some people say the Dragon Boat Festival is for remembering Qu Yuan." I didn't mention him throwing himself into the river etc.

A was interested in making 香包 (xiāng bāo = fragrant pouches). An activity idea for next year's dragon boat festival =)

My younger one insisted he's never had 粽子 (zòng zi). That's because we call it bacang (肉粽) instead.

We say 龙舟 (lóng zhōu) instead of 龙船 (lóng chuán) .
N mixed up 凤 (Trad. 鳳 fèng = phoenix) and 风 (Trad. 風 fēng = wind). It's great that he knows enough characters to mix them up to begin with.
Dragon boat racing:
- started ~2,400 BC, Southern China
- is the oldest, continuously practiced team sport in the world.
^^ If the above claim is incorrect, please do let me know.
5. ACTIVITY #1:
Have each child read and act out two or three action verbs from last playgroup's radicals snatch-up game.
6. ACTIVITY #2:
Build dragon boats out of drink cartons/bottles and cardstock dragon head & tail*. The coloring went great; we didn't finish the project though.
7. REFRESHMENTS:
粽子 (zòng zi) and 比萨 (bǐ sà), labeled with their Chinese names. V's one-year-old love the sweet 粽子 I got from the Asian grocery store.
* Remember to print them one more time in reverse! I forgot to reverse the image before printing the second copy. Whoops.
Plans for Playgroup #3:
1. SONGS:

Introduce themselves by their Chinese name. Explain the meaning (in Mandarin, if possible).
"我叫NAME. 国王的王. 生日的生." etc.

4. SHOW AND TELL:
"这是OBJECT."
One or two additional sentence about the object's color/size/physical characteristics.
Ask follow-up questions as appropriate.
5. ACTIVITY #1:
Guess which character I'm writing.
One child write on the whiteboard one stroke at a time, pausing in between strokes to give the other kids chance to guess the character.
(?) 6. ACTIVITY #2:
红花红花几月开?(When Will The Red Flower Bloom?)
Have one child sit in the middle of the circle.
Everyone in the circle says the chorus: 红花红花几月开?
The child in the middle: 一月开.
Everyone else: 一月不开, 几月开?
Child: 二月开.
Everyone else: 二月不开, 几月开?
etc.
If the child wants to be done with their turn, they answer: 三月一定开!
Everyone should have a turn sitting in the middle and should answer two or three times.
7. REFRESHMENTS:
- ice cream 冰淇淋 (bīng qí lín)
- tortilla chips 玉米片 (yù mǐ piàn)
